"Slim To None is one of the many projects of Ypsilanti musician and visual artist Craig Johnson, a multi-instrumentalist whose creative output never stays in one place too long. While Johnson is involved in multiple bands (Modern Lady Fitness, Goodyhead), and even has other solo projects, Slim To None is where his talents as a songwriter come to life in a weird world of lo-fi bedroom production. The entire album was recorded to cassette four-track over the course of a single month, with Johnson playing all of the instruments and handling all vocal duties. The songs of Be The Sun are melodic, guitar-driven, and full of uncommon hooks. There's the same essence of exploration and outsider feelings that defined the pathfinders of early indie rock, with some similarities in particular to the dazed, sun-blinded pop of the Meat Puppets, the homemade tapes of Daniel Johnston or Lou Barlow's Sentridoh, and the angled melancholy of Pacific Northwestern legends like Built to Spill. Even looking to these possible reference points trying to decode Slim To None, these songs take no predictable turns and exist outside of any obvious influence. Johnson builds a private world with Be The Sun, one made of lively, uptempo songs that are warm and engaging, but just strange enough to keep the listener feeling like the ground could slip out from under their feet at any moment." - Fred Thomas
